Ο Χένρι Ντέιβιντ Θορώ, ο Αμερικανός συγγραφέας και λάτρης της φύσης ( 1817-1862) ζούσε πάντα με την εργασία των χεριών του, περιορίζοντας στο ελάχιστο τις ανάγκες του. Έτσι πίστευε ότι στον άνθρωπο αρκούσε μόνο μια ημέρα εργασίας την εβδομάδα και όχι έξι. Το «πείραμα» στη λίμνη Ουώλντεν αποτελεί μια έμπρακτη απόδειξη ότι ο Θορώ απεχθανόταν τα λόγια που δεν οδηγούσαν σε αντίστοιχες πράξεις. Από τις 4 Ιουλίου του 1845 έως τις 6 Σεπτεμβρίου του 1847, έζησε μόνος του σε ένα σπίτι που έχτισε μόνος του και τράφηκε από προϊόντα του κήπου του που καλλιεργούσε ο ίδιος. Αυτό δεν ήταν ένα απλό ατομικό τεστ επιβίωσης μέσα σε δύσκολες συνθήκες. Το βιβλίο του Ουώλντεν ή η ζωή στα δάση, που κυκλοφόρησε το 1854 (κυκλοφορεί στα ελληνικά από τις εκδόσεις Διεθνής Βιβλιοθήκη, 1981), αποτελεί μια αναλυτική και ολοκληρωμένη περιγραφή της ζωής του στη φύση.
